World Surfing Reserves today announced that two nominated surf zones – Santa Cruz in Northern California and Ericeira in Portugal – have been formally approved and will be dedicated as World Surfing Reserves (WSRs).
These well known spots will join Malibu, California and Manly Beach, Australia on this iconic list.
The Santa Cruz zone, which consists of approximately 11 km of coast extending from Natural Bridges on the western end to Opal Cliffs just east of Pleasure Point, includes a collection of cold water gems.
The Ericeira area of Portugal is a surf haven for both European and International surfers. Many people in Ireland may recognise the name as it’s a very popular surf holiday destination. The approved Ericeira surf zone comprises 4 km of coastline that includes many top surf breaks in a relatively small area.
World Surfing Reserves seeks to designate and protect the most important and cherished surf areas around the world, in partnership with local surf communities.
I know of a couple of spots in ireland that could do with such a designation!
