Weekend Session-Perfection in the North West-Were you out?

“Stand out of the day had to be Gearoid McDaid”

Date: 14/03/2015
Location: Northwest Coast of Ireland
Surfers: Gearoid Mcdaid, Ian Mitchinson Robin Keating, Ciaran Harnesnape & Unknowns!

It was an early start at 05:00 on Saturday morning but the charts looked good and I didn’t really need an excuse to get out of Dublin and hit the West Coast even if it was going to be freezing cold! I needed to get my ‘fix’ and get into the ocean….

I eventually arrived to one of my favourite little stretches on the West Coast and…. It was pumping! The sun was starting to show its face and winds were light offshore and it looked picture perfect. There were only a few guys in the water so I thought I would jump in and score a few icy kegs before the sun disappeared again. [I have lived in Ireland now for 14 years and I still can’t handle the cold. I grew up surfing in boardshorts back in South Africa…]

I got a few good ones and eventually I had to succumb to the cold and get out. Once I had warmed up and could feel my hands and feet again, I grabbed my camera and fired off a few shots of some of the local boys tearing the wave apart. Stand out of the day had to be Gearoid McDaid who dropped into and came out of some bombs but everyone was scoring amazing waves and were smiling from ear to ear. There were some heavy wipeouts and I think I counted 2 broken boards while I was taking my photos. But everyone that got out of the water was stoked!

It was yet another perfect days Surfing on the West Coast of Ireland.

Words from Gearoid: “this morning was a pretty early start! I got to Bundoran expecting it to be pumping at the peak but the swell hadn’t kicked in and i had a fairly average there. A couple of hours later the swell really started to show and this spot started to pump! It was pretty good when I was in the water, there were were only a few of us out and we were all was getting some really good ones! I had just got a new board from fourth surfboards the day before that was kinda of made for barrels and it flew! Such a good feeling getting a new board and getting some good backside barrels on it”
